Signs you need emergency wisdom tooth extraction today
Most jaws don't have room for wisdom teeth. When one gets stuck, it turns into a problem that doesn't fix itself.
Reasons a wisdom tooth needs to come out now rather than later:
- Pericoronitis: the gum flap over a partly erupted wisdom tooth is infected, swollen, and painful, sometimes with pus and a bad taste
- An impacted wisdom tooth that's tilted into the molar beside it and causing pain or decay in both
- A wisdom tooth that has broken or decayed because it sits too far back to clean
- Repeated infections at the same wisdom tooth

What happens at your same-day visit
The exam and X-rays come first. The X-ray shows our dentists the angle of the tooth, the roots, and how close a lower wisdom tooth sits to the nerve in the jaw.
You get the price in writing before we start. Then the area is numbed. For an erupted wisdom tooth, the extraction is much like any other: loosen and lift. For an impacted wisdom tooth, our dentists open the gum, remove a little bone if needed, and often divide the tooth so it comes out in sections. Stitches may be placed. The whole thing is done under local anesthetic.
If a pericoronitis infection is severe, our dentists may drain it and start antibiotics first, then remove the tooth once the swelling has come down.
Aftercare matters: bite on gauze, no straws or smoking for several days, soft food. Lower wisdom tooth sockets are the ones most likely to develop a dry socket, so we'll go over how to avoid it.

Frequently asked questions
Can you remove an impacted wisdom tooth the same day?
Usually, yes. Impacted wisdom teeth are surgical extractions, and our dentists do those in-house Monday through Saturday. After the exam and X-rays you'll get a written price, and if you approve it the tooth can come out at that visit. The exception is a severe active infection, where drainage and antibiotics come first.
What is pericoronitis, and does it always mean extraction?
Pericoronitis is an infection of the gum flap over a partly erupted wisdom tooth. Food and bacteria get trapped under the flap, and it swells, hurts, and sometimes drains pus. It tends to come back. Our dentists may clean the area and treat the infection first, but when the tooth has no room to come in fully, removing it is what stops the cycle.
How long is recovery after wisdom tooth extraction?
Most people are back to normal activity in two to three days after a simple extraction and about a week after a surgical one. Swelling peaks around day two or three and then fades. Keep the socket clean, avoid straws, and call us if pain gets worse after day three instead of better.
