Signs you need broken tooth repair today
Some chips can wait a day. Others can't. Come in today if any of these fit:
- The tooth broke in half, or a large piece of a molar is gone.
- You can see a pink or red spot inside the break. That's the nerve, and it needs cover fast.
- Cold air or water sends a jolt through the tooth.
- Biting down hurts, and letting go hurts more. That pattern points to a cracked tooth, and cracks spread every time you chew.
- A sharp edge is cutting your tongue or cheek.
- The gum around the tooth is swelling.
A small chipped tooth with no pain still deserves a call. Enamel doesn't grow back, and a chip you can barely see today can become a fractured tooth after a week of chewing. Save any piece you can find. Put it in a bit of milk or wrap it in damp gauze and bring it with you. Sometimes it can be bonded back on.
What happens at your same-day visit
We start with the $45 exam and X-rays. The pictures show what your eye can't: how deep the break goes, whether the root is cracked, and whether the nerve is involved. Our dentists explain what they found in plain words.
Then you get options. A minor chip may need nothing more than smoothing. A bigger chip is usually rebuilt with bonding, a tooth-colored material shaped right on the tooth. A tooth that broke in half typically needs a crown to hold what's left together. If the break reached the nerve, a root canal comes first, then the crown. And if a crack runs below the gum line, the honest answer is sometimes an extraction, which we also do here.
You'll see the exact price for your specific repair in writing before any work begins. Many bonding repairs finish in one visit. A crown may take two.

Can a tooth that broke in half be saved?
Often, yes. If the root is intact and the crack doesn't run below the bone, a crown can hold the tooth together for years. If the nerve was exposed, an emergency root canal is done first. The X-ray at your $45 exam tells us which case you're in, and our dentists will walk you through it before you decide anything.
Is a chipped tooth an emergency if it doesn't hurt?
It's not a drop-everything emergency, but it shouldn't wait a month. A chip weakens the tooth, and chewing on it can turn a chip into a crack. Call us, describe it, and we'll get you in the same day or the next morning at 7am. In the meantime, chew on the other side and avoid very hot or cold drinks.
What should I do about the pain until my visit?

Will a fractured tooth need to be pulled?
Only when it can't be saved. A fracture that splits the root or runs deep under the gum leaves nothing solid to build on, and in that case an emergency extraction is the healthier choice. Most fractured teeth don't reach that point, and our dentists will show you the X-ray so you can see which kind you have.
