Signs you need a lost filling or crown fixed today
Crowns and fillings come off over caramel, popcorn, floss that catches, or plain years of chewing, and the tooth underneath is now uncovered. Get seen today if:
- The crown is in your hand, or the tooth feels rough and short
- A temporary crown came off, even if the tooth doesn't hurt yet
- Cold drinks, air, or sweets make the tooth zing
- A piece of filling turned up in your food, or your tongue found a new hole
- A crown is still on but cracked, wobbly, or sitting crooked

With the filling or crown gone, the softer inner layer is exposed, and it can crack under normal chewing. A tooth already trimmed for a crown is especially fragile uncovered. Neighboring teeth also start drifting into the gap, and then the old crown won't fit.
What happens at your same-day visit
Bring the crown or any piece of filling with you. The $45 exam and X-rays check three things: whether decay has crept in under the old restoration, whether the tooth has cracked, and whether the root and nerve are healthy.
A crown that still fits over a sound tooth gets cleaned and recemented, often within minutes. A lost filling is replaced with a new one. A temporary crown that came off is cleaned and reseated.
Some cases take one more step. If decay has spread beneath the old crown, the tooth gets cleaned out and rebuilt before a new crown is made. If the nerve is exposed and the tooth is throbbing, a root canal comes first. A cracked crown usually can't be patched, so a new one is made. Every option comes with an exact written price before any work begins.

Frequently asked questions
Can I glue my crown back on myself?
Please don't use household glue. Super glue and similar adhesives aren't safe in the mouth, they seat the crown wrong, and they make a proper recement harder. To cover the tooth for a day, a dab of temporary dental cement from the pharmacy will do. Then call (602) 737-2446 and bring the crown in.
My temporary crown came off. Is that an emergency?
It's urgent, not a crisis. A temporary covers a tooth that's already been cut down for its permanent crown, and without it the tooth is sensitive and can shift within days, which can keep the permanent crown from fitting. Keep the temporary, don't chew on that side, and come in. Reseating it is usually quick.
How long can I go without a crown?
Days, not weeks. Each day uncovered, the tooth risks cracking and its neighbors begin to move. A tooth that fractures under the gum while uncovered can end up needing an extraction instead of a simple recement. Come in the day it comes off, and a crown that still fits is recemented at that visit.
Can a broken crown be repaired instead of replaced?
A small chip on a porcelain crown can sometimes be smoothed or bonded, much like a chipped natural tooth. A crown that's cracked through, or one where a large section has broken away, needs to be replaced. The X-ray at your $45 exam also tells us whether the tooth beneath it needs a root canal before the new crown goes on.
