Signs you need emergency tooth extraction today
Not every bad tooth has to come out. Our dentists save teeth when saving makes sense, and an emergency root canal or a broken tooth repair is often the answer.
You likely need a same-day tooth extraction when:
- A tooth has cracked below the gumline or split down the root
- Decay has hollowed out so much of the tooth that nothing solid is left to rebuild on
- A tooth is loose from gum disease or an injury and won't tighten back up
- A wisdom tooth is impacted and pressing on the tooth beside it
- The pain is constant and the tooth can't be repaired
Swelling spreading into your cheek or neck means the infection is on the move. If you also have a fever or trouble swallowing, go to a hospital emergency room first, then come to us for the tooth.
What happens at your same-day visit
You'll start with the emergency exam and X-rays. The X-ray shows our dentists how the roots sit and whether the tooth will come out in one piece.
A simple extraction is for a tooth that's fully above the gum. We numb the area, loosen the tooth, and lift it out. Most people feel pressure and nothing else.
A surgical extraction is for a tooth that's broken at the gumline, impacted, or has curved roots. Our dentists make a small opening in the gum, sometimes divide the tooth into sections, and remove it piece by piece. It sounds worse than it feels. You're numb the whole time.
Before we begin, you'll see the price in writing. Then we get the tooth out, pack the socket with gauze, and go over aftercare: bite on the gauze, skip straws and smoking for a few days, soft food, pain medicine as directed. Most extractions, simple or surgical, are finished in a single visit.

The $45 exam fee is the only number we quote before we've looked at the tooth, because the real cost depends on what the X-ray shows. A simple extraction and a surgical one aren't priced the same.
Once our dentists have a diagnosis, you get a written price for the extraction and for anything else they recommend. Nothing starts until you say so. We take cash and most major PPO plans, including Cigna, Aetna, Delta Dental, Guardian, and Principal, and we can set up a payment plan through CareCredit, Cherry, or HFD. Extractions are done here, by our dentists, not sent to another office. That includes surgical extractions and wisdom teeth. If the procedure makes you anxious, nitrous oxide, oral and IV sedation are available; ask when you call.

Expect soreness for two or three days afterward, managed with the pain medicine we recommend. Call us if the pain gets worse instead of better.
Should I get a root canal or an extraction?
If the tooth can be saved, a root canal keeps your own tooth in place and avoids having to replace it later. If the tooth is split, too decayed to rebuild, or loose beyond repair, extraction is the sounder choice. Our dentists will tell you which applies to your tooth, with a written price for each.
